Start with museums that are free

The Bronx Museum, American Folk Art Museum, Museum at FIT, and National Museum of the American Indian offer free general admission. Special programming can have its own access rules.

Match the offer to your visit

Whitney Friday admission requires tickets. MoMA’s free Friday evenings are for New York State residents. The Met’s pay-what-you-wish eligibility includes state residents and students from NY, NJ, and CT; bring proof.

Before you go

Is pay-what-you-wish the same as free?

No. It lets eligible visitors choose a contribution under the institution’s rules. Check minimums, proof requirements, and which exhibitions are included.

Do free gallery hours include films or classes?

Not necessarily. For example, Museum of the Moving Image screenings have separate ticket rules. Check the activity rather than general admission alone.
